Kanye Omari West was born in Atlanta Georgia on June 8, 1977 with brown eyes. His parents divorced when he was just three years old and he moved with his mother to Chicago, Illinois. His mother was an English professor, and accepted a position at Chicago State University as head of the English Department. When Kanye came of college age, he enrolled at the university but soon left to pursue his music. His mother eventually retired from her role at the University to join him in the world of hip-hop as his manager.

Kanye immediately found a niche in the hip-hop music scene as a producer. He is credited for his work on the 2001 album, The Blueprint, released by rapper Jay-Z as well as several other albums and singles released by recording house, Roc-A-Fella records. But for all his success as a producer, he initially had a hard time convincing Roc-A-Fella records to finance his first endeavor as an artist. In February of 2004 he released his first album, aptly titled The College Dropout. His first single off this album "Through the Wire" was well received. The album won critical acclaim and helped ease any doubts about his value as a musician.

Kanye continued both his musical and production careers, and in 2005, he released his second album Late Registration. This was followed by Graduation in 2007 which held the number one spot on the hip-hop album charts for a month. His 2008 album, 808s and Heartbreak, also went to number one and included the hit singles "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless."

Despite his impressive music career, Kanye is probably best known for his antics at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video (which Beyonce was also nominated for), and in the middle of her acceptance speech, Kanye stormed onto the stage, ripped the microphone from her hands, and made the following announcement:

"Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you. I'mma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!"

Angered at the audience's negative response to his interruption, he made a lewd gesture at the crowd before walking off the stage. He was later asked to leave. In subsequent interviews he has attributed his rampage to intoxication and lingering grief from the late 2007 death of his mother, though some believe the whole thing was a incident publicity stunt.

Surprisingly, Kanye does occasionally think about someone besides himself, and even has his own charity, The Kanye West Foundation. The organization was founded by his mother, Dr. Donda West, in 2007, and she was chairperson until her death later that same year. The foundation's mission seeks to lower the national dropout rate by partnering with community organizations to provide access to music production programs.

Kanye has also contributed donations and some of the proceeds of his concert ticket sales to many charities including Doctors Without Borders, The Red Cross and Human Rights Watch.
